On July 2023, 7, Starlink, a subsidiary of Musk's aerospace technology company SpaceX, announced the launch of its satellite network service in Malaysia.

Starlink, the global satellite network service provider under Musk's command, Malaysia became the 60th country to join.

Launch of Starlink network in Malaysia: Internet speed 100Mbps, monthly fee starting from RM220

According to Starlink's official website, its satellite service provides download speeds up to 100Mbps, and the monthly fee starts from RM220. It is flexible and does not require a contract, but users must purchase additional hardware devices.

The standard hardware is priced at RM2300, while the high-performance version is priced as high as RM1.

Users can request a full refund at any time within the 30-day trial period to ensure satisfaction.

Although the cost of Starlink starts from RM 220 per month, its significant disadvantage cannot be ignored-it is relatively expensive for individual users.

Especially compared with YES, Malaysia's first 5G network operator, its 4G/5G network prepaid plan only costs RM30 per month.

Two advantages of Starlink satellite Internet service

However, Starlink’s services offer two major advantages:

  1. First, users can enjoy download speeds up to 100Mbps;
  2. Second, Starlink helps improve internet coverage in rural areas.

On July 2023, 7, Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Sri Anwar announced that the government will purchase 15 Starlink Internet equipment to serve universities, colleges and schools across the country.

He revealed that the decision stemmed from an online meeting with Tesla and SpaceX founder Musk.

According to the Daily News, Anwar said:

"After the meeting, I immediately confirmed with Famie (Musk) the decision to purchase these devices and will install them where the university needs them."

As SpaceX's satellite communication equipment, Starlink provides users with reliable Internet connections through low-orbit satellite groups.

Anwar stressed that Starlink will also comprehensively improve internet coverage in rural areas.However, the first devices will be installed at academic institutions before being rolled out to other regions.

"Starlink is a small device, but it can quickly turn a slow internet connection into a high-speed one. In areas without internet access, it will work immediately because it communicates directly with the satellites."
